Job 17

Job Despairs Mocked Friends

Open in the reader →

My spirit is broken; my days are extinguished; graves await me.

Surely mockers are with me, and my eye dwells on their provocation.

Please put up a pledge for me with yourself; who else is there who would strike hands with me?

For you have hidden their hearts from understanding; therefore you will not exalt them.

One who denounces friends for a share—his children’s eyes will fail.

He has made me a byword among the peoples, and I have become one before whom people spit.

My eye has grown dim from grief, and all my members are like a shadow.

The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent stirs himself up against the godless.

Yet the righteous holds fast to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger.

But all of you, turn back and come now; I will not find a wise man among you.

My days have passed; my plans have been torn apart, the desires of my heart.

They make night into day; light is near in the face of darkness.

If I hope for Sheol as my house, if I spread my bed in the darkness,

I call to the pit, ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My mother and my sister.’

And where, then, is my hope? And my hope—who can see it?

Will they go down to the bars of Sheol? Shall we descend together to the dust?
