Jonah 3

1Then the word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time, saying,

2Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to it the proclamation that I speak to you.

3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city before God, a journey of three days.

4Jonah began to go into the city a day's journey, and he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh will be overturned.”

5And the people of Nineveh believed God, and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from their greatest to their least.

6When the message reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.

7And he proclaimed and said in Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: “Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not graze, and let them not drink water.”

8Let both man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God, and let each man turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands.

9Who knows? God may turn and relent, and turn from the burning of his anger, so that we do not perish.

10When God saw their deeds, that they had turned from their evil way, God relented concerning the disaster that he had spoken to bring on them, and he did not do it.
