Mark 15

1And immediately, early in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; then they bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

2And Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You say so.”

3And the chief priests were accusing him of many things.

4But Pilate again questioned him, saying, “Do you give no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against you.”

5But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate was amazed.

6At the feast he would release for them one prisoner whom they asked for.

7The man called Barabbas was bound with the rebels who had committed murder in the rebellion.

8And the crowd came up and began to ask him to do as he used to do for them.

9But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

10For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.

11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.

12Pilate answered them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews?”

13But they cried out again, “Crucify him!”

14But Pilate was saying to them, “For what evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him!”

15So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.

16Then the soldiers led him inside the courtyard, which is the praetorium, and they call together the whole cohort.

17And they dress him in purple, and after weaving a crown of thorns, they place it on him.

18And they began to salute him: “Hail, King of the Jews!”

19And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him, and kneeling down they were bowing down to him.

20And when they had mocked him, they stripped the purple robe off him and put his own clothes on him. And they lead him out to crucify him.

21And they compelled a certain passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.

22And they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, “Place of a Skull.”

23And they were giving him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

24And they crucify him and divide his garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each would take.

25It was the third hour, and they crucified him.

26And the inscription of the charge against him was written: “The King of the Jews.”

27And with him they crucify two robbers, one at his right and one at his left.

28And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "And he was numbered with the transgressors."

29And those passing by were reviling him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would tear down the temple and build it in three days,”

30Save yourself, coming down from the cross!

31In the same way the chief priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, were saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.”

32Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” And those who were crucified with him were also insulting him.

33And when the sixth hour had come, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, my God, for what reason have you forsaken me?”

35And some of those standing there, when they heard it, were saying, “Look, he is calling Elijah.”

36Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink, saying, “Leave him alone. Let us see whether Elijah is coming to take him down.”

37But Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed his last.

38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

39When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw that he breathed his last in this way, he said, “Truly this man was God's Son.”

40There were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,

41These women, when he was in Galilee, used to follow him and minister to him; and there were many other women who had gone up with him to Jerusalem.

42And when evening had already come, since it was the Preparation Day—that is, the day before the Sabbath—

43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected council member who was himself also waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44But Pilate was amazed that he had already died, and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had died already.

45And after learning from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46And after buying a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

47And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.
