Numbers 1

Moses Counts Israelite Men

Open in the reader →

And Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

Take a census of the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.

From twenty years old and upward, every man going out to war in Israel—you and Aaron shall count them by their companies.

And with you there shall be a man from each tribe, each man the head of his fathers’ house.

And these are the names of the men who shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.

for Simeon: Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;

for Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;

For Issachar: Nethanel son of Zuar.

For Zebulun: Eliab son of Helon.

For the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

For Benjamin: Abidan son of Gideoni.

For Dan: Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

From Asher: Pagiel son of Ocran.

from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;

For Naphtali: Ahira son of Enan.

These were the ones called from the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes, the heads of the thousands of Israel.

So Moses and Aaron took these men, who had been designated by name.

And they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they registered themselves by clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head.

just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, so he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai.

The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out to war:

Their counted men from the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred.

For the sons of Simeon, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those numbered of them, by the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out to war:

their counted men from the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

For the sons of Gad, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go out to war:

Those counted from the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.

For the sons of Judah, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every male going out to war:

Those counted from the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred.

For the sons of Issachar, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go out to war:

those counted from the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand four hundred.

For the sons of Zebulun, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every male able to go out to war:

Those registered from the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400.

For the sons of Joseph, for the sons of Ephraim, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man going out to war:

Those registered from the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred.

From the sons of Manasseh, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man going out for military service:

Their numbered men from the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

For the sons of Benjamin, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go out to war:

Those counted from the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred.

For the sons of Dan, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every male able to go out to war:

Those counted from the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

For the sons of Asher, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man going out to war:

Those counted from the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred.

The sons of Naphtali, by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every male able to go out to war:

those counted from the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

These are the ones counted, whom Moses and Aaron counted, and the leaders of Israel—twelve men, each one for his fathers’ house—were with them.

So all those counted of the sons of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every one able to go out to war in Israel,

So all those who were counted were six hundred three thousand five hundred and fifty.

But the Levites, by their ancestral tribe, were not counted among them.

Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

Only the tribe of Levi you shall not count, and you shall not take their number among the sons of Israel.

But you, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they are to minister to it, and they are to camp around the tabernacle.

When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to camp, the Levites shall set it up. And the outsider who comes near shall be put to death.

The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his camp and each man by his banner, according to their divisions.

But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.

So the sons of Israel did according to all that Yahweh had commanded Moses; so they did.
