Psalms 89

A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

1I will sing of the steadfast love of Yahweh forever; from generation to generation I will make your faithfulness known with my mouth.

2For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.”

3I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant:

4I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for generation after generation. Selah

5The heavens will praise your wonders, O Yahweh—indeed, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.

6For who in the skies can be compared to Yahweh? Who among the sons of God is like Yahweh?

7God is greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who surround him.

8O Yahweh, God of hosts, who is mighty like you, O Yah? Your faithfulness surrounds you.

9You rule over the swelling of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them.

10You crushed Rahab like one slain; with your mighty arm you scattered your enemies.

11The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours. The world and all that fills it—you founded them.

12The north and the south—you created them; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy in your name.

13You have a mighty arm; your hand is strong; your right hand is raised high.

14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.

15Blessed are the people who know the joyful shout; O Yahweh, they walk in the light of your face.

16In your name they rejoice all day long, and in your righteousness they rise high.

17For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favor you raise our horn.

18For our shield belongs to Yahweh, and our king to the Holy One of Israel.

19Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones and said, “I have bestowed help on a mighty one; I have raised up a young man from among the people.”

20I have found David my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him.

21My hand will be steadfast with him; indeed, my arm will strengthen him.

22No enemy will deceive him, and no wicked person will afflict him.

23I will crush his adversaries before him and strike down those who hate him.

24And my faithfulness and my steadfast love will be with him, and in my name his horn will be exalted.

25I will set his hand on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers.

26He will call to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.’

27Indeed, I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

28Forever I will keep my steadfast love for him, and my covenant will stand firm for him.

29I will establish his offspring forever, and his throne as long as the heavens endure.

30If his sons abandon my law and do not walk in my judgments,

31If they profane my statutes and do not keep my commandments,

32Then I will punish their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with blows.

33But I will not withdraw my steadfast love from him, nor prove false to my faithfulness.

34I will not violate my covenant, or alter what has gone out from my lips.

35Once I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David.

36His offspring will endure forever, and his throne will be like the sun before me.

37Like the moon, it will be established forever, a faithful witness in the sky. Selah

38But you have cast him off and rejected him; you have become enraged with your anointed one.

39You have repudiated the covenant with your servant; you have defiled his crown on the ground.

40You have breached all his barriers; you have made his strongholds a ruin.

41All who pass along the road have plundered him; he has become an object of scorn to his neighbors.

42You have raised the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice.

43You have even turned back the edge of his sword; you have not enabled him to stand in battle.

44You have brought his splendor to an end and cast his throne to the ground.

45You have shortened the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah

46How long, Yahweh? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire?

47Remember how fleeting I am! Why have you created all the sons of man in vain?

48Who can live and not see death? Can he save his life from the hand of Sheol? Selah

49Where are your former acts of steadfast love, Lord, which you swore to David in your faithfulness?

50Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants—how I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples.

51with which your enemies have taunted, Yahweh, with which they have taunted the footsteps of your anointed.

52Blessed be Yahweh forever. Amen and amen.
