Tobit 8

1And when they had finished dining, they brought Tobiah in to her.

2As he went in, he remembered the words of Raphael, and he took the ashes of the incense and placed the fish’s heart and liver on them, and made them smoke.

3But when the demon smelled the odor, it fled to the remotest parts of Egypt, and the angel bound it.

4And when the two of them had been shut in together, Tobiah rose from the bed and said, “Get up, sister, and let us pray that the Lord may show us mercy.”

5And Tobiah began to say, “Blessed are you, O God of our fathers, and blessed is your holy and glorious name forever; may the heavens and all your creation bless you.”

6You made Adam, and you gave him Eve as a helper and support, his wife; from these came the seed of mankind. You said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make for him a helper like himself.’

7And now, Lord, I am not taking this my sister because of sexual immorality, but in truth. Command that I may find mercy and that I and she may grow old together.

8And she said with him, “Amen.”

9And both slept through the night.

10And Raguel got up, went and dug a grave, saying, “Perhaps he too may die.”

11And Raguel came into his house,

12And Edna said to his wife, “Send one of the servant girls, and let them see whether he is alive; but if not, so that we may bury him and no one may know.”

13And the maidservant entered, opening the door,

14and he found the two asleep.

15And she went out and reported to them that he was alive.

16And Raguel blessed God, saying, “Blessed are you, O God, with every blessing; and may your holy ones bless you, and all your creatures; may all your angels and your chosen ones bless you forever.”

17Blessed are you, because you have made me rejoice, and it has not happened to me as I suspected; rather, according to your abundant mercy, you have acted with us. Blessed are you, because you have shown mercy to two only children. Show them mercy, Master; bring their life to completion in health with gladness and mercy.

18Then he ordered the servants to fill in the grave.

19And he held a wedding feast for them for fourteen days.

20And Raguel said to him under oath, before the days of the wedding were completed, that he should not leave unless the fourteen days of the wedding were fulfilled,

21and then, after taking half of his possessions, to go in good health to your father; and the rest when I and my wife die.
