1 Enoch 72

1The book of the courses of the luminaries of heaven, how they are, each according to their companies, and according to their dominion and their seasons, according to their names and their origins, and according to their paths, which Uriel, the holy angel who was with me, showed me—he who is their guide—and the whole record of them, as he showed me, and how it is with regard to every year of the world and forever, until a new work is accomplished which will endure forever.

2And this is the first law of the luminaries: the sun, a light, has its rising in the portals of heaven on the east, and its setting in the western portals of heaven.

3And I saw six portals from which the sun rises, and six portals where the sun sets, and the moon rises and sets in those portals. And the leaders of the stars, together with those whom they lead, are six in the east and six in the west; and all of them, one after another, in exact order, with many windows to the right and to the left of those portals.

4And first a great light comes forth, whose name is the sun, and its disk is like the disk of heaven, and it is wholly full of fire that gives light and heat.

5And the chariots by which it ascends are driven by the wind, and the sun goes down from the sky and returns through the north in order to reach the east; and it is led so that it may enter the gate and shine on the face of heaven.

6Thus it comes out in the first month through the great gate, which is the fourth of those six gates that are toward the sunrise.

7And in that fourth gate, from which the sun comes out in the first month, there are twelve open windows, from which a flame comes out when they are opened at their appointed times.

8And when the sun rises from the sky, it goes out through that fourth gate for thirty mornings, and through the fourth gate in the west of the sky it goes down exactly.

9And in those days the day grows longer from day to day, and the night grows shorter from night to night, until thirty mornings.

10On that day the day becomes longer than the night by a ninth part, and the day becomes exactly ten parts, and the night becomes exactly eight parts.

11And the sun comes out from that fourth gate, and sets in the fourth gate, and returns to the fifth gate of the east for thirty mornings; then it comes out from it and sets in the fifth gate.

12And at that time the day grows longer by two parts, and the day becomes eleven parts, and the night grows shorter and becomes seven parts.

13And it enters at dawn and goes out through the sixth, and it goes out and sets in the sixth gate for thirty-two mornings, according to its sign.

14On that day the day becomes longer than the night, and the day becomes twice the night, and the day becomes twelve parts, and the night grows shorter and becomes six parts.

15And the sun rises so that the day grows shorter and the night lengthens, and the sun returns to the east and enters into the sixth gate, and rises from it and sets for thirty mornings.

16And when thirty mornings are completed, the day decreases by exactly one part, and the day becomes eleven parts, and the night seven.

17And the sun goes out from the west, from that sixth gate, and travels eastward, and rises in the fifth gate for thirty mornings, and sets again in the west in the fifth western gate.

18On that day the day diminishes by two parts, and the day becomes ten parts, and the night eight parts.

19And the sun comes out from that fifth gate, and sets in the fifth gate in the west, and rises in the fourth gate according to its signs for thirty-one mornings, and sets in the west.

20On that day the day becomes equal with the night, [and it becomes even], and the night becomes nine parts, and the day also nine parts.

21And the sun comes out from that gate, and sets in the west, and returns to the east, and comes out from the third gate for thirty mornings, and sets in the west at the third gate.

22And on that day the night exceeds the day, and the night increases from night to night, and the day grows shorter from day to day, until thirty mornings, and the night becomes exactly ten parts, and the day eight parts.

23And the sun comes out from that third gate, and sets in the third gate in the west, and returns to the east, and comes out from the second gate in the east for thirty mornings; and in this way it sets in the second gate in the west of heaven.

24And on that day the night becomes eleven parts, and the day seven parts.

25And on that day the sun comes out from that second gate, and sets in the west at the second gate, and returns to the east at the first gate for thirty-one mornings, and sets at the first gate in the west of heaven.

26And on that day the night increases and becomes nine parts, and the night becomes twelve parts and two parts exactly, and the day six parts.

27And the sun completes its courses, and again it travels upon those courses; and it enters through that gate for thirty mornings, and in the west it sets opposite it.

28And on that day the night decreases from its length by a ninth part, that is, one part, and the night becomes eleven parts, and the day seven parts.

29And the sun returns and enters the second gate, which is in the east; and it returns to that principal course for thirty mornings, rising and setting.

30And on that day the night is shortened from its length, and the night becomes ten parts, and the day eight parts.

31And on that day the sun goes out from that gate and sets in the west, and returns to the east and rises through the third gate for thirty-one mornings, and sets in the west of heaven.

32On that day the night decreases and becomes nine parts, and the day becomes nine parts, and the night equals the day, and the year becomes exact.
