Moon's Phases Governed by Decree

Open in the reader →

And after this law I saw another law for the lesser light, whose name is the moon.

And its circuit is like the circuit of heaven, and its chariots, by which it goes out, are driven by the wind; and light is given to it by measure.

And in every month its going out and its returning vary, and its days are like the days of the sun; and when its light is full, it is a seventh part of the light of the sun.

And in this way it rises, and its front, which is toward the east, comes out on the thirtieth morning, and on that day it becomes visible, and it shall be for you the head of the month, on the thirtieth day with the sun, in the gate from which the sun comes out.

And its distant half is one seventh part, and all its disk is empty, without light, except for a seventh part of it—a fourteenth part of its light.

And on the day it takes up a seventh part of half of its light, and its light becomes one and a half seventh parts.

And it sets with the sun; and when the sun rises, the moon rises with it and takes half a portion of light. And on that night, at the beginning of its morning, before the day, the moon sets with the sun and is dark through that night—seven parts and a half.

And on that day it rises with exactly seven parts, and it comes out.
