1 Enoch 78

1And these are the names of the sun: one is Aryares, and the second, Tomas.

2And the moon has four names: the first is Asonya, the second Abla, the third Benase, and the fourth Erae.

3These are the two great luminaries; their disks are like the disk of heaven, and the size of the disks of the two of them is equal.

4In the disk of the sun there are seven portions of light which are added to it beyond the moon, and in measure they are added until the seventh portion of the sun is completed.

5And they set, and they enter the western portals, and make their circuit by the north, and by the eastern portals they come out upon the face of the sky.

6And when the moon rises, it appears in the sky as half of a seventh part, [and all the light is in it,] and it completes its light as fourteen parts.

7And fifteen parts of light are added within it until the fifteenth day; and its light is completed as a sign of the year, and it becomes fifteen parts, and the moon comes into being by half of a seventh part.

8And in its waning, on the first day it diminishes to fourteen parts of its light, and on the second it diminishes to thirteen parts of light, and on the third it diminishes to twelve, and on the fourth to eleven parts, and on the fifth it diminishes to ten parts, and on the sixth it diminishes to nine parts, and on the seventh it diminishes to eight parts, and on the eighth it diminishes to seven, and on the ninth it diminishes to six, and on the tenth it diminishes to five, and on the eleventh it diminishes to four, and on the twelfth it diminishes to three, and on the thirteenth it diminishes to two, and on the fourteenth it diminishes to half of a seventh part of all its light; and on the fifteenth day that which remains from the whole is consumed.

9And in certain months, the month has twenty-nine days, and once twenty-eight.

10And Uriel showed me another law: when light is transferred into the moon, and from where it is transferred from the sun.

11And throughout the time when the moon is waning, it diminishes its light before the sun until fourteen days [its light is completed]; and when it is extinguished, all its light is completed in the sky.

12On the first day she is called the new moon, because on that day light rises upon her.

13It is completed with exactness: by day the sun goes down in the west, and from the east the moon rises by night and gives light all night, until the sun rises before it, and the moon is seen before the sun.

14From where the light comes to the moon, from there again it wanes until all the light is finished, and the days of the month pass, and its disk remains empty, without light.

15And it makes three months of thirty days, and in its season, when its waning occurs.
