Deuteronomy 24

1If a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she does not find favor in his eyes because he has found in her some indecency, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it into her hand, and sends her out of his house,

2and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man's wife,

3and the latter man hates her, and writes her a certificate of divorce, and puts it into her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her as his wife—

4her first husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before Yahweh; and you shall not bring sin upon the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance.

5When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army, nor shall any duty be imposed on him. He shall be free for his household for one year, and he shall make his wife whom he has taken rejoice.

6No one shall take a pair of millstones, or even the upper millstone, as a pledge, for he would be taking a life as a pledge.

7If a man is found kidnapping one of his brothers from the sons of Israel, and he enslaves him and sells him, then that kidnapper shall die. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

8Be careful in the case of an outbreak of skin disease, to observe very carefully and to do according to all that the Levitical priests instruct you; as I have commanded them, so you shall be careful to do.

9Remember what Yahweh your God did to Miriam on the way when you were coming out of Egypt.

10When you lend your neighbor anything, you shall not go into his house to take his pledge.

11You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you are making the loan shall bring the pledge out to you.

12And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge.

13You must surely return the pledge to him at sunset, so that he may lie down in his cloak and bless you; and it will be righteousness for you before Yahweh your God.

14You shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your brothers or one of your sojourners who is in your land, within your gates.

15You shall give him his wages on his day, and the sun shall not go down on it, because he is poor and sets his life on it, so that he does not cry out against you to Yahweh, and it becomes sin in you.

16Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, and sons shall not be put to death for fathers; each man shall be put to death for his own sin.

17You shall not pervert the justice due to a sojourner or an orphan, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.

18And remember that you were a servant in Egypt, and Yahweh your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this.

19When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to take it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

20When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the sojourner, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

21When you harvest the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again after yourself; it shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.

22And remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
