Exodus 28

1And you, bring near to yourself Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the sons of Israel, to serve as priests for me: Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.

2And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.

3And you shall speak to all the wise of heart, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, and they shall make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, for him to serve me as priest.

4And these are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a checkered tunic, a turban, and a sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and for his sons, for him to serve as priest to me.

5And they shall take the gold, and the blue, and the purple, and the scarlet yarn, and the fine linen.

6And they shall make the ephod of gold, blue, and purple, scarlet yarn, and fine twisted linen, the work of a skillful designer.

7It shall have two shoulder pieces joined to its two ends, so that it may be joined together.

8And the skillfully woven band of his ephod, which is on it, shall be like its workmanship, of one piece with it: gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine twisted linen.

9And you shall take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel.

10six of their names on the one stone, and the names of the remaining six on the second stone, according to their birth order.

11Like the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, you shall engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel; you shall make them enclosed in settings of gold.

12And you shall set the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel, and Aaron shall bear their names before Yahweh on his two shoulders for remembrance.

13And you shall make settings of gold.

14And make two chains of pure gold, braided like cords; and put the braided chains on the settings.

15You shall make a breastpiece of judgment, the work of a skillful designer; like the work of the ephod you shall make it: of gold, blue, purple, scarlet yarn, and finely twisted linen you shall make it.

16It shall be square and doubled, a span its length and a span its width.

17And you shall set in it settings of stones, four rows of stones: the first row shall be a ruby, a topaz, and an emerald.

18and the second row: turquoise, sapphire, and diamond.

19and the third row: jacinth, agate, and amethyst.

20And the fourth row: beryl, onyx, and jasper; they shall be set in gold in their settings.

21And the stones shall correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, twelve according to their names. They shall be engraved like a signet, each with his name, for the twelve tribes.

22And you shall make on the breastpiece chains of pure gold, braided work like cords.

23You shall make two gold rings on the breastpiece, and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastpiece.

24And you shall put the two braided chains of gold on the two rings, at the ends of the breastpiece.

25And you shall put the two ends of the two cords on the two settings, and you shall place them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod, at its front.

26You shall make two gold rings and put them on the two ends of the breastpiece, on its edge that is toward the inner side of the ephod.

27You shall make two rings of gold and put them on the two shoulder-pieces of the ephod, underneath, on its front side, opposite its seam, above the skillfully woven band of the ephod.

28They shall bind the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a cord of blue yarn, so that it may be on the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and the breastpiece shall not come loose from the ephod.

29Aaron shall carry the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place, for a memorial before Yahweh continually.

30And you shall put the Urim and the Thummim into the breastpiece of judgment, and they shall be on Aaron’s heart when he goes in before Yahweh. And Aaron shall bear the judgment of the sons of Israel on his heart before Yahweh continually.

31You shall make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue.

32Its opening for the head shall be in the middle of it; around its opening there shall be a woven edge, like the opening of a coat of mail, so that it may not be torn.

33You shall make on its hem pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet yarn, all around its hem, with bells of gold between them all around.

34a gold bell and a pomegranate, a gold bell and a pomegranate, around the hem of the robe all around.

35It shall be on Aaron when he ministers, and its sound shall be heard when he goes into the Holy Place before Yahweh and when he comes out, so that he may not die.

36And you shall make a plate of pure gold, and engrave on it, like the engravings of a seal: ‘Holy to Yahweh.’

37And you shall put it on a cord of blue, and it shall be on the turban; it shall be at the front of the turban.

38It shall be on Aaron’s forehead, and Aaron shall bear the iniquity of the holy things that the sons of Israel consecrate, for all the gifts of their holy things. It shall always be on his forehead, for acceptance for them before Yahweh.

39You shall weave the tunic in checker work of fine linen, and you shall make a turban of fine linen, and you shall make a sash, the work of an embroiderer.

40For Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics, and you shall make sashes for them, and you shall make caps for them, for glory and for beauty.

41You shall clothe Aaron your brother and his sons with him, and you shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, and they shall serve as priests to me.

42And make for them linen undergarments to cover their naked flesh; they shall be from the hips to the thighs.

43And they shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they enter the tent of meeting, or when they approach the altar to minister in the holy place, so that they may not bear guilt and die. It shall be a permanent statute for him and for his offspring after him.
