Leviticus 16

1And Yahweh spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron’s two sons, when they came near before Yahweh and died.

2And Yahweh said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother that he must not come at just any time into the Holy Place, inside the veil, before the atonement cover that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.”

3With this Aaron shall enter the Holy Place: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.

4He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and the linen undergarments shall be on his body; he shall tie the linen sash around himself and wrap the linen turban around himself. These are holy garments. He shall wash his body with water then put them on.

5And from the congregation of the sons of Israel he shall take two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.

6Aaron shall present the bull of the sin offering that is for himself, and he shall make atonement for himself and for his household.

7And he shall take the two goats and set them before Yahweh at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

8And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats: one lot for Yahweh and one lot for Azazel.

9Then Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot for Yahweh fell, and make it a sin offering.

10But the goat on which the lot for Azazel fell shall be presented alive before Yahweh, to make atonement over it, to send it away into the wilderness to Azazel.

11Aaron shall present the bull of the sin offering that is for himself, and he shall make atonement for himself and for his household; then he shall slaughter the bull of the sin offering that is for himself.

12And he shall take a full censer of coals of fire from upon the altar before Yahweh, and both the fullness of his hands of finely ground fragrant incense, and bring it inside the veil.

13And he shall put the incense on the fire before Yahweh, so that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he may not die.

14And he shall take some of the bull's blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat, eastward; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

15Then he shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering that is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil, and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the atonement cover and before the mercy seat.

16Thus he shall make atonement for the sanctuary because of the uncleannesses of the sons of Israel and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tent of meeting that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.

17And no man shall be in the tent of meeting when he enters to make atonement in the holy place, until he comes out. And he shall make atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.

18Then he shall go out to the altar that is before Yahweh and make atonement for it, and he shall take some of the bull's blood and some of the goat's blood and put it on the horns of the altar all around.

19He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the sons of Israel.

20When he has finished making atonement for the sanctuary, the tent of meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat.

21And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins, and put them on the head of the goat, and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man appointed for the task.

22The goat shall carry on itself all their iniquities to a cut-off land, and he shall send the goat away into the wilderness.

23Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments that he put on when he went into the holy place, and he shall leave them there.

24He shall wash his body with water in a holy place, put on his garments, come out, and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.

25And he shall burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.

26The one who sends the goat away to Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

27And the bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the sanctuary, he shall bring out to outside the camp, and they shall burn their hides, their flesh, and their dung in the fire.

28The one who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.

29And this shall be for you a permanent statute: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble yourselves, and you shall do no work, whether the native-born or the sojourner who sojourns among you.

30For on this day atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; from all your sins before Yahweh you shall be clean.

31It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall humble yourselves; it is a permanent statute.

32And the priest who is anointed and whose hand is filled to serve as priest in place of his father shall make atonement, and he shall put on the linen garments, the holy garments.

33Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary, and for the Tent of Meeting, and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.

34This shall be for you a permanent statute, to make atonement for the sons of Israel for all their sins once in the year. And he did as Yahweh commanded Moses.
