Leviticus 25

1And Yahweh spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying,

2Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you come into the land that I am giving to you, then the land shall keep a Sabbath to Yahweh.

3For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather its produce.

4But in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of complete rest for the land, a sabbath to Yahweh. You shall not sow your field, and you shall not prune your vineyard.

5You shall not reap the aftergrowth of your harvest, and you shall not gather the grapes of your unpruned vine; it shall be a year of complete rest for the land.

6The Sabbath produce of the land shall be for you for food—for you, for your male servant, for your female servant, for your hired worker, and for your resident foreigner who dwells with you.

7And for your livestock, and for the wild animals that are in your land, all its produce shall be for food.

8You shall count for yourself seven sabbaths of years, seven years seven times, and the days of the seven sabbaths of years shall be for you forty-nine years.

9Then you shall sound a trumpet blast in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land.

10And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty in the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, and each of you shall return to his property, and each of you shall return to his family.

11It is a Jubilee; the fiftieth year shall be for you. You shall not sow, and you shall not reap its volunteer growth, and you shall not gather the grapes of its unpruned vines.

12For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you. From the field you shall eat its produce.

13In this Year of Jubilee, each of you shall return to his property.

14And if you sell something to your neighbor, or buy from your neighbor, no man shall oppress his brother.

15According to the number of years after the Jubilee, you shall buy from your fellow; according to the number of years of crops he shall sell to you.

16In proportion to the greater number of years you shall increase its purchase price, and in proportion to the fewer number of years you shall reduce its purchase price, because he is selling to you a number of harvests.

17And no man shall oppress his neighbor, but you shall fear your God, for I am Yahweh your God.

18So you shall carry out my statutes and keep my judgments, and do them, and you shall dwell in the land securely.

19The land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live securely on it.

20And if you say, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year, since we will not sow or gather our produce?’

21Then I will command my blessing for you in the sixth year, and it will produce the yield for three years.

22And you shall sow in the eighth year and eat from the old produce until the ninth year; until its produce comes in, you shall eat the old.

23The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me.

24And in all the land of your possession, you shall grant redemption for the land.

25If your brother becomes poor and sells some of his property, then his nearest kinsman-redeemer shall come and redeem what his brother has sold.

26But if a man has no redeemer, and his hand attains enough and he finds sufficient means for his redemption,

27then he shall calculate the years since its sale and return the surplus to the man to whom he sold it, and he shall return to his property.

28But if his hand does not find enough to restore it to him, then what he sold shall remain in the hand of the one who bought it until the year of Jubilee; and it shall go out in the Jubilee, and he shall return to his property.

29If a man sells a house for dwelling in a walled city, its redemption may be made until the completion of a full year from its sale; its right of redemption shall last for days, that is, a full year.

30But if it is not redeemed before a full year is completed for it, then the house that is in a city that has no wall shall pass permanently to the one who bought it, throughout his generations; it shall not go out in the Jubilee.

31But the houses of the villages that have no wall around them shall be regarded as the fields of the land; redemption shall be available for them, and in the Jubilee they shall go out.

32As for the cities of the Levites, the houses in the cities of their possession may be redeemed permanently by the Levites.

33And if one of the Levites redeems it, then the sale of the house in the city of his possession shall be released in the Jubilee; for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the sons of Israel.

34But the field of pastureland belonging to their cities must not be sold, for it is their permanent possession.

35If your brother becomes poor and his hand falters beside you, then you shall support him; so that he may live beside you as a resident foreigner or a temporary resident.

36Do not take interest or profit from him, but fear your God, and let your brother live with you.

37You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for increase.

38I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, to be your God.

39And if your brother becomes poor with you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a servant.

40He shall be with you like a hired worker, like a sojourner; he shall serve with you until the year of jubilee.

41Then he and his sons with him shall go out from you, and he shall return to his clan and return to the property of his fathers.

42For they are my servants, whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as servants are sold.

43You shall not rule over him harshly, but you shall fear your God.

44As for your male servant and your female servant who may belong to you, from the nations that are around you, from them you may buy a male servant and a female servant.

45You may also buy from the sons of the sojourners who reside with you, and from their families who are with you, whom they have fathered in your land; and they shall become your possession.

46You may pass them on as an inheritance to your sons after you, to inherit as a possession permanently; from them you may exact labor. But over your brothers, the sons of Israel, no man shall rule over his brother harshly.

47If the means of a resident foreigner among you become sufficient, and your brother beside him becomes poor and sells himself to the resident foreigner among you, or to a member of the foreigner’s clan,

48After he has been sold, he may be redeemed; one of his brothers may redeem him.

49or his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him; or one of his close blood relatives from his clan may redeem him; or if his hand prospers, he may redeem himself.

50He shall calculate with his buyer from the year he sold himself to him until the year of jubilee, and the price of his sale shall be according to the number of years; like the days of a hired worker he shall be with him.

51If many years still remain, in proportion to them he shall repay his redemption price from the money of his purchase.

52But if few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, then he shall calculate with him; according to his years he shall repay his redemption.

53Like a hired worker year by year he shall be with him; he shall not rule over him harshly in your sight.

54But if he is not redeemed by these means, then he and his sons with him shall go out in the year of Jubilee.

55For the sons of Israel are my servants; they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.
