Simplified People's Open Bible translation philosophy

The Simplified People's Open Bible (SPOB) is the understanding-first English edition of the People's Open Bible. POB remains the controlling, source-audited translation; SPOB makes POB's meaning easier for a modern common reader to grasp without hiding where interpretation has entered the wording.

Maximum warranted understanding

POB follows an optimal-equivalence middle path between formal and dynamic translation. SPOB moves farther toward immediate comprehension. Its goal is maximum warranted understanding: say as plainly as the evidence allows what a passage communicates in context, but no more.

That means SPOB may:

  1. shorten dense syntax, split long clauses, and replace archaic or academic English with ordinary modern wording;
  2. state the contextual force of an idiom directly when the POB audit trail and immediate passage strongly support it;
  3. explain an ancient measure, social custom, legal formula, or inherited church term in words a reader can understand without prior training;
  4. preserve a source-language image while adding a bounded takeaway when the image alone would predictably mislead a modern reader.

For example, Ecclesiastes' hevel is rendered with the concrete image “vapor” and a bounded explanation of its brief, elusive, and often unexpected character. In 1 Peter 5:8, “stay spiritually awake” makes the immediate vigilance against the devil explicit while preserving “stay alert” as the conservative alternative.

POB controls the meaning

SPOB is not an independent original-language translation and not a free paraphrase. Every SPOB record points back to its POB base and must preserve:

  • POB's lexical and theological decisions;
  • meaningful ambiguity and textual variants;
  • important metaphors, images, and repeated structures;
  • alternatives that remain genuinely disputed.

When a plain rendering would erase a real ambiguity, SPOB keeps the ambiguity or records the alternative in a footnote. Clarity is not permission to make a contested doctrine sound certain.

Interpretation must be visible

An understanding-first translation inevitably makes interpretive judgments. SPOB records them instead of pretending they are not there. Each warranted expansion can carry:

  • the POB phrase and the clearer SPOB rendering;
  • the claim being made explicit;
  • textual or contextual evidence;
  • a confidence level;
  • preserved alternatives and external witnesses.

High-confidence contextual meaning may appear in the main text. Lower-confidence or disputed readings remain in notes or attributed alternatives.

No teacher or tradition controls the text

Historical interpreters, denominations, and modern teachers may help identify a possible reading, but none may silently govern SPOB. A named interpreter can be recorded as an external witness only when the reading also stands on textual, lexical, and contextual evidence. The translation does not adopt a teacher's larger doctrinal system merely because one local interpretation is useful.

How the corpus was produced

The complete first corpus was produced as an auditable multi-pass process:

  1. Azure GPT-5.6 Sol drafted the understanding-first SPOB records from POB and its reasoning layers.
  2. Azure GPT-5.6 Terra independently reviewed faithfulness, clarity, and doctrinal overreach.
  3. Sol applied every substantive revision request, with schema validation before atomic replacement.
  4. Explicit editorial adjudications remained controlling when an automated recommendation conflicted with a deliberate project decision.
  5. Azure-policy-blocked passages received separate editorial comparison rather than a fabricated automated verdict.

The July 12, 2026 completion pass contains 43,105 validated records, with 17,137 substantive review corrections applied and no pending review hashes. The detailed completion audit is in docs/SPOB_CANON_WIDE_REVIEW_2026-07-12.md.

The reader's contract

SPOB should feel like a complete, natural English Bible rather than commentary inserted sentence by sentence. At the same time, readers must always be able to return to POB for the closer source rendering, footnotes, and full public audit.

SPOB optimizes for understanding. POB preserves the deeper translation record. Together they make clarity and transparency complementary rather than competing goals.
